Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Music and dance have long been integral to festivals, serving as powerful tools for cultural expression, storytelling, and audience engagement. In Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, festivals such as Igala Day and Ebira Cultural Carnival showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage, with music and dance playing pivotal roles in attracting and entertaining audiences. According to Adewale and Ibrahim (2023), music and dance not only provide entertainment but also create emotional connections and foster a sense of community among attendees. These elements enhance the overall festival experience by encouraging active participation, evoking cultural pride, and creating memorable moments. However, despite their importance, the strategic use of music and dance to maximize audience engagement is often underexplored. This study examines the role of music and dance in enhancing audience engagement at festivals in Lokoja, focusing on their impact, challenges, and potential for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While music and dance are central to festivals in Lokoja, their potential to enhance audience engagement is often hindered by factors such as inadequate planning, lack of professional performers, and insufficient integration into festival programs. These challenges can result in disengaged audiences and a diminished festival experience. Previous studies have explored the cultural significance of music and dance, but limited research focuses on their role in audience engagement at festivals in Lokoja (Okafor & Musa, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of music and dance in enhancing audience engagement at festivals in Lokoja Local Government Area.
